Is my dream possible?
I have a dream to own 500 acres in Missouri. I am 18 years old, I want to go to 4 years of college and get a degree, and by the time I am 26 be living on my property and paying on it. I have a vision of a completely green off grid house built with sustainable/renewable resources, my own labor, and of my design. In my dream 95% of the 500 acres will be restored to it’s pre-human settlement state by myself, which I will work on for the rest of my life. when I die this 500 acres will be given to the conservation department in a land trust.
I have no savings, just will, and desire. So my question is – IS IT POSSIBLE? and my next question – HOW?
I’ve been racking my brain for 6 months and still haven’t come up with the right plan.
It’s good to dream! And I’m glad you are practical too, trying to create a workable plan.
Achieving this dream at 26 might be difficult, but maybe later in life.
What are your skills and abilities? Do you have rich relatives or family?
1. Yes, you need to go to college and get a good paying job.
2. Earn money, budget, save money.
3. Fund your 401k/retirement fund.
4. Create an emergency 3-6 month fund (in high yielding savings account)
5. Invest whatever is left.
Maybe you can get really lucky and work for a company that gives you options, the company goes public, and the stock price rockets up, and you make a lot of money.
Maybe you have rich relatives or family who are willing to help you out.
Maybe you can scale down your dreams. Start with a few acres first. Maybe you can be happy with a subset of that dream.
Alternatively, instead of buying, maybe you can take up environmental engineering, or something like that. Maybe you can choose a career where you can do this. So even though you might not own the property, you are developing it, and creating, and making things better.
Maybe you can also research organizations which do things similar to your dreams. Maybe simply by working with them, this is part of making you happy. And you can still buy a subset of those 500 acres (even just 10??) that you live on for many years.
